Griffs Split MAAC Home Opener

The Golden Griffins opened their home MAAC schedule with a split against the Marist Red Foxes on a cold day at the Demske Sports Complex.

Game one started out great for Amanda Baun. She struck out the first seven Marist batters she faced; all of them went down swinging. But a pair of walks got her into trouble in the third inning. After two of them and an infield single, Nicole Cheek finally put a ball out of the infield for Marist, and they had a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the same inning, Meghan Cuda hit yet another triple, and scored on Val Nappo's ground out. It was Meghan's seventh triple of the season, leaving her two short of Jody Tassone's school record, set back in 1995. A fifth inning bases loaded triple by the same Nicole Cheek gave Marist an insurmountable lead, as the Griffs were held at bay by Emily Osterhaus, who has been MAAC Pitcher Of The Week two weeks running. Val Nappo added a solo home run, but the final score was 10-2 in favor of Marist. Amanda Baun did strike out 12 in the game, but after the exciting start, surrendered nine earned runs.

Canisius fell behind 1-0 early in game two, and like last week, finally hit the panic button and put six runs on the board in the third inning for a lead they would never lose. A double by Robin Kennery produced two runs; another double, from the bat of Tori Nappo, produced one more. This brought a new pitcher into the game for Marist, and Marissa Miller greeted her with a three run bomb over the left field fence. Marist rallied for three more runs in the game, but the Griffs' lead held out and they won 6-4. Jen Consaul got the win for Canisius.

Getting game two was crucial for the Griffs, as Manhattan comes to town next week. The Lady Jaspers are currently 6-0, and playing very well. The Griffs are 2-2 in the MAAC, good for fifth place at the moment.
