2013 Canisius Softball Schedule

The Canisius softball 2013 schedule was released by the college this week, and it shows the Griffs playing 53 games this season (or 54 if they make it to the championship game of the North Carolina A&T Invitational). Absent this season is a west coast trip which they generally make every other season. The Griffs will open play indoors in Cleveland of all places in a tournament hosted by Cleveland State. During that tournament they will play a rare non conference game against Niagara. This rarity will occur again the next week when they play MAAC rival Manhattan at North Carolina A&T's tournament. After playing in the Hampton Pirate Invitational  on the first weekend of March, Canisius will participate in their most challenging tournament when they travel to Fairfax, VA for the Cherry Blossom Classic. They will there play Ohio State and Pittsburgh (twice), plus host George Mason.

After the tournament portion of the season, Canisius will play a pair of doubleheaders at Ohio University; the first time, I believe, they have played at that school. Their western New York opener will be at Buffalo on March 27 with a single game against the Bulls. The Griffs will then head south for three non conference doubleheaders against Mount Saint Mary's; the College of Charleston; and Charleston Southern.

Canisius will begin MAAC play on the road, at Rider, on April 6. Then comes a period in the schedule when they will play all their home dates consecutively, eight of them. The home schedule opens with a doubleheader against St. Bonaventure, followed two days later when Detroit Mercy visits the Demske Sports Complex for a pair of games. Marist then comes to town for a MAAC showdown on April 13. Non conference foe Robert Morris will be at Canisius on April 16, which will be a prelude for the MAAC match against Niagara on Thursday April 18. MAAC rivals Manhattan and Saint Peter's will be in town over the weekend of April 21-22. The home slate closes when Buffalo and Canisius pair off on April 24.

The Griffs will close the regular season on the road with three MAAC doubleheaders that will likely make or break their season. The final weekend of April will find them at Iona and Fairfield; then after a doubleheader at Colgate on May 1, they will close the season at Siena on April 4. The Griffs will really have to set themselves in good shape before this final stretch. Fairfield is the favorite to win it all in 2013; and although Iona lost their two star pitchers to graduation, going to New Rochelle to play never is easy. Siena looks to be very strong this season.

The MAAC tournament will be held in Poughkeepsie, NY again this season on May 9-11.

TAYLOR DECKER SIGNS WITH CANISIUS

The Griffs once again look to Arizona for talent!
Taylor Decker of Scottsdale, AZ has signed a national letter of intent to play softball at Canisius College beginning in the 2014 season.

Taylor Decker is a catcher and outfielder at Cactus Shadows High School (love that name!) in Cave Creek, AZ.  A starter behind the plate since her freshman season, she has a strong and accurate arm, earning second team All-Arizona honors in 2011. In the batter's box, Taylor had a great 2012 season, hitting for a .484 average which included a team leading 12 doubles. She also had a .677 slugging percentage, and drove home 16 runs. Taylor currently plays travel ball with the Arizona Storm, and is a teammate of recent Canisius signee Sarah Andrews.

Congratulations Taylor!
