Brenda Santana Not Coming To Canisius

Brenda Santana, who had signed with Canisius last fall, signed a National Letter Of Intent with Tallahassee Community College last week. Why she changed schools is something I do not know.
I also do not know if Canisius signed anyone to replace her for this coming season, or will use the scholarship in the future.
The Golden Griffins open fall season in September.

Former Griff To Coach MAAC Rival

Courtesy of the Gaston Gazette

Former Canisius Golden Griffin Ellie Hanover has resigned her position at Belmont Abbey College to accept the head coaching position at Niagara University effective immediately.

Ellie achieved the seventh highest batting average in Canisius history when she hit .451 in 1997, a season in which she earned All-MAAC status. She had transferred to Canisius after being named All-American at ECC. The Western New York native returns home to coach her former school's arch rival after a successful division 2 coaching career at Belmont Abbey and Florida Tech. She previously coached in the area at ECC and D'Youville, where she was named NEAC Coach Of The Year.

I think Ellie has paid her dues, and that this is a great signing by Niagara. And it will certainly bring more excitement to the old rivalry.

Congratulations Ellie!

Lizzy Gatto Among The All Time Best

Earlier this year I told you about Lizzy Gatto's run to the national top five all time in stolen base percentage.

Here's how she ended up:

  1. Jen Dean, UNI (1994-97) 64-64 1.000
  2. Lizzy Gatto, Canisius (2009-12) 64-67 .9552
  3. Jami Koss, S. Ill (1993-96) 63-66 .9545
Great accomplishment by Lizzy, and one which warrants serious consideration for her inclusion into the Canisius Sports Hall Of Fame some day in the future. Notice she is the only modern age player in the top three. The next modern age player closest to her is the legendary Caitlin Lowe, to put Lizzy's feat into perspective.

Lizzy had a great career at Canisius, finishing with a .311 batting average, with 12 home runs and 86 RBIs. Along with her 64 stolen bases was her great play in center field. She won a MAAC Championship, and was named All-MAAC three times.
