La Nova Wins Aunt Rosie's 16U

Congratulations to La Nova for another tournament win.
Next chance to see Jen Sansano pitching for La Nova will be this Thursday at the Aunt Rosie's 18U portion of the tournament. I'm guessing she will also be pitching for the La Nova Open team next week.

So Cal Crunch Playing For Berth In Nationals

This just in from the west coast! Amanda Baun and the So Cal Crunch 18U Gold are one win away from qualifying for the 18U Gold National Championship to be held in Oklahoma City during the first week of August.

The Crunch have won 3 games in the 73 team Pacific Coast Region Gold Territorial (6 teams will qualify). Amanda is having a terrific tournament, with a 2-0 record and a 0.87 earned run average. The Crunch play Sunday at Noon (PDT). If they win that game, they're in Oklahoma City. If they should lose, they would still have a chance to win through the losers bracket by winning 2 games later in the day. At any rate, this is a great experience for Amanda before arriving at Canisius in August.

Stay tuned!
*UPDATE*
(6/28 9:25pm)
The Crunch lost their first game today, however they just beat the So Cal Diamonds in the losers bracket and are about to play one more game the winner of which will qualify for the Nationals. Stay tuned!
*UPDATE*
The Crunch lost their last game late last night, so they failed to qualify but made a good run at it.

Aunt Rosie's 16U Tourney This Weekend

The Aunt Rosie's International Fastpitch tournament continues this weekend with the 16U portion of the schedule.

I dropped in Friday, and happened to see Jen Sansano pitching for the LaNova 16U team. I also noticed a college coach watching her. BTW, Jen, who just finished her junior year at Clarence High, was named 2nd Team All New York State this past week. She had a great junior season, with a 18-1 record and a 0.50 earned run average! She also struck out 247 batters in 139 innings pitched. Jen was also recently named to the All-ECIC Team, and named All-ECIC Pitcher Of The Year. Wow, that's a lot of honors for someone with another year of High School to go.

I've seen her pitch quite a few times now and it seems to my amateur eyes that she is the real deal and can only get better especially with some college coaching. BTW, she pitches for my Alma Mater, although I was there long before she was born (!).

Aunt Rosie's Tourney

The great annual Aunt Rosie's International Fastpitch Tournament begins later this month. Five weekends of top notch Softball on all the fields at the Pepsi Center in Amherst. I think we'll be seeing some current Canisius players in the Women's Open, which will be held July 10-12. I would guess Kerry Ulmer, Katie Lancellotti, Amanda Cannizzo, Lauren Falzone, Michelle Fridey, and Katie Medina may be playing.
The 18U Tournament will be held July 2-5. Most of the schedule is now posted:

Clarence Loses Title Game

Williamsville North defeated Clarence 5-0 today to capture the Section VI Class AA Championship.

A big crowd at the Pepsi Center saw Robin Kennery pitch a 5 hit shutout over the powerful Red Devils.
This was the first time I saw Stephanie Pfentner play...and although it wasn't under the best of circumstances it was interesting seeing her up close. She's bigger than I thought she was, and she has a strong arm. I noticed that whenever she came up to bat, the outfielders moved all the way back to the fence! So her High School career ends; she'll be at Canisius in August.

It was also the first time I have seen Junior pitcher Jen Sansano. North scored 2 runs off her in the first inning without getting the ball out of the infield. After that, the Clarence team seemed rather uptight to me; they never recovered. Jen is an impressive figure in the circle, she looks like an athlete who could play any sport and excel in it. I don't think she had her best game by a long shot, but North really didn't hit her hard. Bunts, infield singles, stolen bases, a timely double and errors were what won it.

We'll see Stephanie and Jen at the Aunt Rosie's Tournament. More on that next week.

Big Weekend For Canisius Softball

But the season is over, you're saying. Yes, but not for three of the Griffs' 2010 freshmen. This weekend they will be playing in big games.

Out west, Chloe Contreras and the Vista Murrieta Broncos (27-4) will be playing Friday for the California Southern Section Championship against Rancho Cucamonga Etiwanda (28-2). This will be the Broncos' first Southern Section Championship game in school history.
*UPDATE*
Vista Murrieta lost tonight to Etiwanda 4-0. Vista Murrieta ends their most successful season in history with a 27-5 record. Great season Broncos!

Stephanie Pfentner's Clarence High Red Devils won their semifinal game Thursday over Niagara-Wheatfield 3-0. Jen Sansano threw another no-hitter and struck out 12! I think it was her fourth no-hitter this season, which includes a perfect game. She's finishing her Junior year, so we will know in November where she will be attending college in 2011. Needless to say, there will be major interest in her.

http://www.niagara-gazette.com/sports/local_story_155221326.html

An interesting quote from the Niagara-Wheatfield coach:
"Bourque (six hits, three strikeouts) walked Stephanie Pfentner to load the bases the first time, but that was the plan, Belter said.

'We weren’t going to throw to Pfentner. We weren’t going to let her beat us,” he said. “We were going to make other people’s sticks do something, and really, through five innings or so, it was working. There was nothing cheap about the runs that they got. They got good hits from the people that we challenged.' "

So Clarence now will play in the Section VI Class AA Championship Saturday at 5:30PM at the Pepsi Center in Amherst. The Red Devils are #1 with a record of 22-1. Their opponent will be #2 Williamsville North (20-5). There will be other Section VI Championships at the Pepsi Center Saturday, but this is the biggie!

Meanwhile, Brittany Wood and the New Jersey Elite will begin a four game series Saturday at 7PM against the famous Brakettes of Connecticut. The 63 year old Brakettes are the elite of the elite. You should be able to see Brittany play by visiting the Brakettes website and clicking on the live stream section:

Section VI Playoffs Continue Today

Stephanie Pfentner and Jen Sansano lead the Clarence High Red Devils on their quest to win another Section VI Class AA title beginning with a quaterfinal game today against Orchard Park High. The game will be played at Clarence High School with first pitch set for 4:45PM. If Clarence (14-0 in league play) go on to win this game, they will host a semifinal game Thursday. The Championship game is scheduled for Saturday, June 6 at 5:30PM at the Pepsi Center in Amherst. If Clarence, the #1 ranked team in Western New York, gets that far, they will then play for the New York State Championship.

This will be your last chance to see Stephanie play High School Softball before she joins Canisius this fall. Good luck Red Devils!
*UPDATE*
Clarence won 7-0. Stephanie had 2 hits, Jen Sansano struck out 13 batters. The Red Devils will host Niagara-Wheatfield Thursday, with a win putting them in the Championship game.

Vista Murrieta Ranked #14 In The Nation

Chloe Contreras (#00) and her fellow Broncos are currently ranked as the 14th best High School Softball team in the country, according to USA Today:

USA TODAY RANKINGS

Actually VM is now 26-4, and will play in the California Southern Section Division 2 semi finals Tuesday vs. Los Osos.

A great experience for Chloe before she heads to Canisius in the fall.

Good luck Broncos!
*UPDATE*
Vista Murrieta won their game vs. Los Osos 5-0 and will play for the Southern Section Division 2 Championship Saturday vs. Etiwanda.
