Bulls Swept At Kent State

The Buffalo Bulls had a tough weekend in Kent, Ohio as they opened their Mid American Conference schedule with a pair of losses.

The Bulls lost Saturday 2-0. Terese Diaz had a rocky start and was relieved by Sharon Barr who shut the door the rest of the way, but Buffalo could only produce 2 hits.

Sunday's game is better left forgotten as the Golden Flashes crossed home plate 9 times in the third inning, the biggest blow being a grand slam home run by Alyssa Frobase (pictured). The final was 9-1 in 5 innings. The Bulls are now 17-10 (0-2 in the MAC).

Next for the Bulls is a pair of games against bitter enemy Canisius. Well, I don't know if there is any bitterness involved, but I do know the teams split a pair of games in the South earlier this year.

2009 MAAC Preview

The Golden Griffins open the Conference portion of their schedule tomorrow against Rider, so let's take a look at how the MAAC shapes up this season.

Fairfield University

The Stags have a record of 9-14 this spring. Kristina Lingo leads the team with a .333 batting average. Sarah Minice is 6-7 in the circle with a 3.68 ERA. The Griffs have an all time record of 33-22 vs. Fairfield. The teams will meet April 18 at Fairfield.

Iona College

The Gaels have a record of 6-10 this spring. Rachelle Harris leads the team with a .340 batting average. Sarah Jacksonn is 5-3 in the circle and has a stingy 0.98 ERA. The Griffs have an all time record of 31-5 vs. Iona. The teams will meet April 19 in New Rochelle, NY.

Manhattan College

The Jaspars have a record of 6-14. Ashley Rampino leads the team with a .286 batting average. She also is 5-3 in the circle with a 2.93 ERA. The Griffs have an all time record of 41-6 vs. Manhattan. The teams will meet April 4 at Canisius.

Marist College

The Red Foxes have a record of 7-15. Melissa Giordano leads the team with an impressive .431 batting average. Jessica Green has a .417 batting average. Pitching has been a different story. Caitlin Carpentier has a 4-7 record with a 4.74 ERA. The Griffs have an all time record of 21-7 vs. Marist. The teams will meet April 26 at Canisius.

Niagara University

The arch rival Purple Eagles have a 14-7 record this spring. They are led by Felicia Coffey who has a .426 batting average. Kayla Hines is batting .394. Teresa Healy is batting .354. In the circle, Michelle Krier is 5-3 with an ERA of 1.92. The Griffs have an all time record of 78-16-1 vs. Niagara. The teams will meet April 9 at Canisius.

Rider University

The Broncs have a 5-16 record. Allyson Melia leads the team with a .328 batting average. Lauren Brunner is 2-3 with a 4.42 ERA. The Griffs have an all time record of 17-11 against Rider. The teams will play tomorrow at Lawrencville, NJ.

St. Peter's College

The Peahens have a record of 6-8 this spring. Samantha Bennett leads the team with a .357 batting average. Tricia Reingle is 4-3 with a 1.36 ERA. The Griffs have an all time record of 34-11 vs. St. Peter's. The teams will meet April 5 at Canisius.

Siena College

The Saints have a record of 2-11 this spring. Jenny McNulty leads the team with a .270 batting average. Amanda Filippazzo has a 1-4 record with a 2.68 ERA. The Griffs have an all time record of 32-4 vs. Siena. The teams will meet May 2 in Loudonville, NY.

Outlook

As you can see by the record, The Griffs have been the dominant force in the MAAC. They are 272-78 in conference play. They have won 12 regular season titles, and 11 MAAC Tournaments. The winner of the MAAC Tournament receives a place in the National Tournament, and the Griffs have won this bid 10 of the last 15 years. They again are the favorite to win it all, but they do have 6 freshmen playing. I think Niagara is going to give them a good run for the money, they have had an outstanding spring. But, the Griffs were 15-1 in MAAC play last season.

Home Sweet Home

Northeast college softball teams have a definite disadvantage due to the school year. The Griffs must play their first 20 games or so off campus, usually down south or in the far west. Their early record usually reflects this. But even when they finally get to play at home, which they are scheduled to do tomorrow, it's still an iffy proposition. The Griffs have played in snow before! With a limited time frame to get games in, the conference games will only be postponed by weather if it's really bad, and around here that's an all out blizzard! Of course, softball can't be played in pouring rain either. Scheduling the first home games is a toss of the coin. For instance today, it's 60 and no rain, no wind. But tomorrow's forecast calls for a high of 47 with a 50% chance of rain. And with any wind coming off Lake Erie, it will be chilly.

The Golden Griffins play at the Demske Sports Complex (pictured) which was built in 1989 and is home to the Baseball, soccer, and lacrosse teams as well as softball. It has to be configurable to fit onto a small city campus. They put a new field in over the summer, something called "A-Turf". It looks like grass and dirt, but isn't really (There is real dirt around home plate and the picher's circle). It smells like rubber tires! It is an all weather turf, so a little rain won't affect play. Brand new scoreboards were installed also. The Canisius College campus is located on Main St. in the heart of Buffalo, and quite frankly the neighborhood surrounding it has deteriorated much over the years. The campus is enclosed in its own little world. For those who wonder about the name "Canisius" (cuh-NEE-shis), it's a Jesuit school named after a Jesuit saint, St. Peter Canisius. And what is a "Golden Griffin"? A mythical lion and eagle crossbreed!

The Griffs play very well at home, and will play 16 games there this year.

Bulls Split Doubleheader With Syracuse

It was a sunny, but brisk home opener at Nan Harvey Field on the Buffalo campus. The Bulls took the first game, and lost the second in extra innings.

Syracuse jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first game, scoring runs in the first 3 innings, Kelly Saco blasting a solo homerun over the centerfield fence to help the Orange's cause. This chased UB starter Sharon Barr from the game, which was bad news for Syracuse because Terese Diaz shut them down the rest of the way. Buffalo exploded for 4 runs in the bottom of the third inning after loading the bases and getting rbis from Kristin Waldron, Dana Carter and Sharon Barr. They added a run in the 6th to seal the game.

In the nightcap, Syracuse again jumped out to the early lead, but the Bulls scored 2 in the 6th helped by a Kristin Waldron triple. Syracuse tied the game in their half of the 7th and the game was sent to extra innings. But the Orange put up a 4 spot in their half of the 8th to win going away. The Bulls are now 17-8 on the year.

Buffalo Bulls Report 3/23

On the eve of the home opener against Syracuse, the University at Buffalo softball team has already won 6 more games than they did in 2008! Yes, the team that went 10-32 last year currently sits on a 16-7 record after going 4-1 this past weekend at the Lady Pirate Classic at Hampton U.

The Bulls pitching was strong this weekend hurling 3 shutouts, including a 1 hitter by Sharon Barr against S. Carolina St. Barr is 8-4 this season, oh and I forgot to mention last time I posted that she NO HIT Manhattan on March 14! Freshman Terese Diaz is 8-2 with 88 strikeouts in 64 innings pitched, and has a 1 hitter of her own (South Dakota). With 5 of their last 7 games being shutouts, it's not difficult to figure out how the improvement has occurred.

The Bulls have (once again) won 8 of their last 9 games, and haven't done badly at bat either. Freshman catcher Kristin Waldron leads the team with a .377 average, and 17 rbis. Senior second baseman Erin Zilka has been hitting consistently all season at a .321 clip. Sophomore outfielder Kristen Gallipani is tops on the team with 9 stolen bases.

So Buffalo is off to a great start this year, and the weather looks decent for tomorrow's game against Syracuse. I'll be there, and will report back.

CANISIUS 2 CENTRAL CONNECTICUT ST. 1

The Griffs win their 2nd straight come from behind extra inning game. Juliette pitched a great game, but I'm not sure she'll even get the win as Mallory Aldred replaced her with 1 out in the 9th inning. But the Griffs would not have had a chance to win were it not for her 8 innings of shutout pitching.

Rachelle Barrientos knocked in the tying run (after Katie Lancellotti was moved to 3rd base by a Lauryn Chris bunt) and showed her speed by scoring the winning run all the way from 1st base on Paige Freiberger's clutch 2 base hit. Lizzy Gatto continues her hot streak by getting 2 hits including a triple. So the Griffs leave us on the edge of our seats once again and improve their record to 8-10.

They continue tournament play Saturday against Idaho St.
BTW, the next Canisius win will be the 700th of Coach Rappl's career.

Longest Game In Canisius Softball History

Yesterday's 13 inning marathon against St. Mary's was the longest game in Griffs' history, surpassing the previous longest game which was 11 innings vs. North Dakota St. in 2006.
The real story though was the performance of freshman pitcher Caroline Main, who relieved Mallory Aldred in the 3rd inning and pitched the remaining 11 innings, allowing only 1 run. You'll remember she had a rough go of it vs. a great Long Beach St. team Sunday, so this outing must have been a tremendous confidence booster for her.

Lauren Falzone, pinch running, reached 3rd on another error that put Katie Lancellotti on 1st. Lizzy Gatto, who is on a hot streak, singled home Lauren. Then Emily Helbig doubled in 2 runs to seal it. Good for her, she needed that.

Caroline Main pitched 11 innings of relief allowing only one run!! She struck out 6 batters . Lizzy Gatto was 2 for 5 with an RBI and 2 runs. She has 6 hits in her last 3 games. Rachelle Barrientos had 2 hits an RBI and a run. Katie Lancellotti scored twice.

After Mallory Aldred left the game after 2 innings, Coach Rappl had 5 freshmen in the game, and they all contributed. Caroline Main was just fabulous.

Coach Rappl Closing In On 700 Wins

Canisius coach Mike Rappl is 3 wins shy of 700, and may achieve the milestone this week.

Coach Rappl, a Canisius alum, is in his 30th year as the Golden Griffins coach. As of today, he has an all-time record of 697-384-2; that includes a record of 272-78 in the MAAC. His teams have won 11 MAAC Tournaments and have appeared in 10 NCAA Tournaments. In 1993, his Golden Griifins set a then NCAA Division 1 record with 35 consecutive victories (the team was 36-3 that year). Last season, the Griffs won an NCAA Tournament game, after losing to Arizona. Coach Rappl is in Western New York's Softball Hall Of Fame.

Perhaps his greatest achievement is his recruiting. Canisius is a small Jesuit school located in the heart of Buffalo. As a northern school, winter training is indoors, and the Griffs typically play their first 20 games or so on the road. Yet he is always bringing top notch players aboard the program, typically from warm California. Many times these players choose Canisius over...warmer schools! This makes the Griffs a dominant MAAC team. He also does not shy away from scheduling games against very good schools, which in the long run toughens his team up for conference play.

Look for victory #700 very soon!

Buffalo Bulls Report

As promised, I am here to give periodic updates on the progress of the University at Buffalo Bulls Softball squad, and I have encouraging news for Bulls fans!

After this weekend's doubleheaders at the Rebel Games in Florida, Buffalo is currently on a 4 game winning streak, and have taken 8 of their last 9 contests and currently have a record of 12-6. The Bulls got better as the weekend went along, beating Sacred Heart 3-2; Penn 6-4; Rhode Island 5-0; and in a 5 inning game, Manhattan 8-0.

UB already owns victories over schools such as Memphis, Canisius (hah!), St. John's, Marshall, South Dakota, and Valparaiso. They next play this next weekend at the Hampton Lady Pirate Classic, where they will be facing off against: Howard, Maryland Eastern Shore, and TBA (that's To Be Announced for those of you living in NF!).

When tournament play is over, Buffalo finally opens up at home with a doubleheader against state rival Syracuse at Nan Harvey Field on the Amherst campus March 24, weather permitting. It would have to be a blizzard for a cancellation, which may or may not happen. They then begin MAC play, but with a doubleheader sandwiched in against crosstown rival Canisius at the Canisius campus. This will be April Fool's day, a perfect day for being at each other's throats.

So Canisius have lost their first 2 games of the tournament to fall to 4-7. On the bright side, last year they began the season 5-7, and ended up with a 39-14 record, so there is a long season ahead.

Day One At The Marshall Invitational

It was a tough day for Buffalo as they just lost to Marshall 11-1.

Delaware begins play in the tournament Saturday, Canisius will play them at 11am. Canisius has a record of 3-1 against Delaware.

Mallory Aldred was just fantastic against Buffalo today. Her 15 strikeouts was a personal record for her. She is now 2-2, but it was almost unfair that she was credited with the loss against Buffalo last week, since she pitched against only one batter in the game in the extra inning with a runner placed on 2nd base, and that batter bunted and the winning run was scored on a throwing error. I would guess she would pitch against Marshall tomorrow, but we'll see.

Welcome To The Blog Riley!

My guy Riley has joined the blog and will give reports on the University at Buffalo softball team as well as the local softball scene.

But I'm still the better hitter ;-)

Game 6 @ Marshall (@ Huntington, WV)

*UPDATE*
Canisius scores (Katie Lancellotti) in the 3rd to make it 3-1 Marshall.

*UPDATE*
Marshall hits a grand slam homer in the 4th inning and now Caroline Main is in the game for Juliette.
Marshall 8 Canisius 1
*FINAL*
MARSHALL 10 CANISIUS 1 (5)

Not a great game for the Griffs as Marshall hits a 2 run homer in the 5th to end the game, dropping Canisius to 3-3.

So the Griffs split their games on the first day of the tournament. Two games Saturday against Delaware and Marshall.
