Raining In Raleigh

The Wolfpack Challenge tournament is currently in a rain delay, including the game between Canisius and Notre Dame scheduled for 9am.

A look at the radar map shows the entire state of North Carolina engulfed in a cloud, so it doesn't look good for today, but I'll keep an eye on the situation.

A decision will be made at 6pm concerning the status of today's games.

Today's games have been called off due to rain.
A revised schedule for Sunday has been released, with Canisius playing one game vs. Notre Dame at 9am, weather permitting. The Griffs' games against St. John's and Charleston have been cancelled.

A mix of rain/snow is in the forecast for Sunday in Raleigh with cold temperatures, so it is in doubt whether there will be any more games.

Game 4 @ North Carolina State

Mallory Aldred gets the start as Canisius meets North Carolina St. for the first time ever. I will post updates here.

Scoreless after 2 innings. Both teams have 1 hit.

Allison Presnell hit a 2 run homer in the 4th inning to give North Carolina St. a 2-0 lead.

Canisius had 2 runners on base in the 5th inning, but could not get them home so the score remains 2-0 NC State.

Allison Presnell hit another 2 run homer to give NC State a 4-0 lead in the 6th inning.

The Griffs' bats were cold today as they only had 2 hits. The game was close until a tough 6th inning. Canisius falls to 2-2 on the season.

The Golden Griffins have 2 games scheduled for Saturday, against Notre Dame and St. John's. However, the forecast is calling for rain in Raleigh, so we shall see.

Game 3 vs. Buffalo (@ Raleigh, NC)

Juliette Bowers gets the start in the first game of the Wolfpack Challenge. Freshman Terese Diaz is pitching for Buffalo. I'll update this post during the game.

No score after 1 inning. The Golden Griffins are the "road" team in this game. Juliette has one strikeout so far.

Paige Freiberger walked in the second inning and Katie Lancellotti hit a double to give Canisius a 1-0 lead. That's 5 RBIs in 2 starts for Katie!

Canisius 1 Buffalo 0 after 3 innings. Juliette has allowed 1 hit and struck out 4 batters so far.

Heading into the final inning with the Griffs clinging to a 1-0 lead. Juliette has struck out 7; both teams have 3 hits.

Buffalo tied the game in the bottom of the 7th with an unearned run as a result of 2 errors by Paige Freiberger. We go into extra innings.

Buffalo scored in the bottom of the 8th inning to win. Mallory Aldred was in the game and Buffalo scored when Lindsey Hampton made it all the way home from 2nd base on a bunt. Both teams had 4 hits; both Buffalo runs were unearned. Mallory takes the loss and is now 1-1. Tough loss for the Griffs who are now 2-1 on the season and will play host North Carolina St. at 2:30 today.

Seven Freshmen

The Canisius College Golden Griffins softball team has 7 freshmen playing for them this year! But as I was composing my player profile page (which I will have links to in the sidebar), my memory was refreshed as to what an outstanding group of players they are. All of them were stars on their High School teams, as well with their travel teams. And as we have seen, already they have contributed 2 games into the season.

They can all play right now, but 2 years down the road and watch out!

Around Town

I'll be updating the progress of the other local Division 1 teams. Last night at the Kennesaw State K-Club classic, the University at Buffalo split 2 games---losing to Miami 8-0 and beating Drexel 4-3.

Today they're playing Memphis and Iowa. Niagara opens their season next weekend.

Buffalo just beat Memphis 2-1 in 9 innings. Freshman pitcher Terese Diaz struck out 11 batters in her college debut! Buffalo is 2-1, and will face Iowa at 4:30 at the K-Club classic in Georgia.

Buffalo lost this afternoon to Iowa by a 4-0 score.
They are in action next against Canisius at the Wolfpack Challenge in Raleigh, NC.

The Newest Golden Griffins

I forgot to post back in December that four players signed National Letters Of Intent to play softball for Canisius College.

The newest Golden Griffins are:
Amanda Baun (Riverside, CA)
Chloe Contreras (Murrieta, CA)
Stephanie Pfentner (Clarence Center, NY)

Amanda is a pitcher; Chloe is an outfielder; and Stephanie is a catcher. And of course, they're all smart---they have to be to be admitted to Canisius!

See you in the fall girls!

Game 2 @ Norfolk State

Freshman pitcher Caroline Main (Seaside,CA) will make her Golden Griffin debut in game 2 of the double header. She was a 29 game winner at Stevenson High last year, and was Monterey County athlete of the year. I thought she got stronger as the fall season progressed, it will be interesting to see how she will do in her first start. This post will update as the game begins.

Wow! The Griffs scored 10 runs in the top of the second inning. Emily Helbig and Angela Turrey each had 2 RBIs. Lizzy Gatto, Cameron Norton, Rachelle Barrientos, and Katie Lancellotti each had a RBI. I'm happy to say that Kerry Ulmer, who I reported back in September hurt her shoulder, is back and healthy and had 2 RBIs pinch hitting.
10-0 Griffs.

Caroline Main has allowed no hits and struck out 3 batters after 2 innings.
10-0 Griffs.

The Griffs have taken an 11-0 lead in the top of the third inning, as Cameron Norton knocked in a run. It looks like Cameron is going to have a very productive season, IMO she's the best player for the Griffs.
Norfolk State's pitchers are having a rough go of it in the second game. They were in the MEAC championship game last season, and have a lot of returning players, so I'm a little surprised they are getting hit so hard at home.
Coach Rappl put Lauryn Chris in at second base.

The Griffs scored another 3 runs in the top of the fourth inning. Freshman Amanda Cannizzo (Amherst,NY) had a RBI, and Michelle Fridey singled in 2 runs.
14-0 Griffs.

Oh my, the Griffs showed no mercy in this mercy rule shortened game. They had 19 hits. Cameron Norton had 6 hits on the day! Caroline Main gave up only 2 hits, and struck out 5 batters in her debut, well done Caroline! BTW, Freshman Katie Lancellotti hit her first college homer to top everything off! Did you know her father was a baseball player? A very impressive start of the season for Canisius!
The Griffs don't play again until February 27 when they travel to Raleigh for the North Carolina State Invitational. They will play some tough schools there, more on that later.
Have a nice trip home girls!!

Game 1 @ Norfolk State

I'll update the action for the opening game of the season in this post.

Juliette Bowers will be pitching the first game of the doubleheader. She's a senior who won 20 games last season, leading the Griffs to the MAAC championship and an NCAA Tournament appearance. I'm a little surprised that freshman Lizzy Gatto (Hollister,CA) is starting at shortstop because I did not see her play the position during the fall season. I thought she was an excellent fielder though. Game starts in a few minutes.

2 Norfolk St. errors resulted in A Canisius run in the top of the first inning. Cameron Norton hit a single, and Lauren Falzone scored the run.

1-0 Griffins.

Canisius scored a run in the top of the second as a result of a third Norfolk St. error. Amanda Cannizzo, pinch running for Emily Helbig, scored from first base off of a sacrifice bunt by Rachelle Barrientos, who was thrown out at third. Lizzy Gatto also had a double in the inning.
2-0 Griffs.

After 3 innings, Juliette Bowers has allowed only 1 hit, and has struck out 2.
2-0 Griffs.

Lizzy Gatto is 2 for 2 with a single in the top of the fourth inning. Senior Rachelle Barrientos also singled, but the Griffs don't score, and it's still 2-0.

Norfolk St. hit a homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning, then Juliette got into some trouble allowing runners to reach second and third with one out. She was relieved by Mallory Aldred who struck out the next batter. Then catcher Angela Turrey threw out the runner at third to end the inning.
Griffs still lead 2-1 after 4 innings.

Mallory Aldred struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth inning!!
She has 4 strikeouts in 1.2 innings pitched. Still 2-1 Griffs. Freshman Lauryn Chris (Gilroy, CA) makes her first appearance as a Golden Griffin going in for first baseman Emily Helbig.

A 1-2-3 inning for Mallory as she strikes out another 2, giving her 6 strikeouts in 2.2 innings! Canisius clinging to a 1 run lead heading into the final inning.

Cameron Norton slams a 3 run homerun in the top of the seventh inning!!!
5-1 Griffs.
Angela Turrey hits a homerun to make it 6-1 Griffs!!!
Freshman Katie Lancellotti (Clarence,NY) makes her first appearance as a Golden Griffin, pinch hitting for Paige Freiberger.

Mallory Aldred strikes out another 2 to end the game.
The co-captains were great in this game. Mallory came into the game in a real jam, got out of it, and ended with 8 strikeouts in 3.2 innings. Cameron Norton was 3 for 4 with a 3 run homer in the top of the 7th to seal the victory.
Canisius had 8 hits and no errors. Norfolk St. committed 4 errors early in the game, and that hurt them. Lizzy Gatto had 2 hits in her debut, Lauren Hope had a hit and a stolen base. Lauren Falzone scored 2 runs. But Mallory Aldred did not allow a hit when she was in there, so I would have to give her star of the game, as she shut down Norfolk St. when they had a chance to get back into the game, and never gave them another chance.
Canisius is 1-0 with game 2 of the double header coming up!

Canisius Voted MAAC Preseaon Favorite

The Golden Griffins have been picked as the favorite to win the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference in a coaches poll released last week. The Griffs were 15-1 in the conference last year, winning their 10th championship since 1990.

In the same coaches poll, 4 Golden Griffins were named to the preseason All-MAAC team. Seniors Juliette Bowers (P) and Cameron Norton (3B) were joined by Junior Michelle Fridey (C) and Sophomore Lauren Hope (OF) as honorees, the most of any team in the conference.

Juliette was one of 44 pitchers at the Division 1 level to win 20 games last year (20-3). Cameron hit .288 last year, with 3 homeruns. Michelle hit .329 last year, and .400 in the MAAC tournament. Lauren hit .354 and stole 40 bases (a school record) last year as a freshman, and was named MAAC Rookie Of The Year.

Canisius will begin the 2009 season next Sunday, February 15 with a doubleheader at Norfolk State.
