Golden Griffins Power Past MCC

Michelle Fridey had 7 RBI's including a 2 run homerun as Canisius College crushed Monroe Community College 14-0 Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

MCC may only be a Community College, but they are 3 time NJCAA Division III champions (2006-2008). However, this afternoon they were a bit out of their league. It was a partly cloudy warm fall day in Buffalo, but the Canisius bats were hot after the game opened with 3 scoreless innings. The teams agreed to a 10 inning game, so the numbers are slightly inflated, but junior Michelle Fridey had a powerful day with 3 hits including a smash over the left centerfield fence. She also cleared the bases with a double. Angela Turrey had a 2 RBI double; Cameron Norton also had an RBI double. Lauryn Chris showed off her speed with 3 infield singles and a stolen base.

Monroe CC is a good team, but they could not handle the Canisius pitching, especially Mallory Aldred's tricky changeup. The senior breezed through 4 innings. Juliette Bowers smiled through 3 innings and got past a bases loaded jam with no damage. Freshman Caroline Main looked very powerful in the last 3 innings, and seems a lot more comfortable. The Ms. California Softball finalist is now sporting shades in the circle. The Canisius pitching looks strong again for next spring.

Kerry Ulmer was on the bench, still in a sling. Hopefully her shoulder will be mended by March. The Golden Griffins close their fall season Sunday at Erie Community College in Amherst.

Rained Out

Day 2 of the Canisius/Nan Harvey classic was rained out. Actually, it wasn't raining at the time, but apparently the fields were a mess from last night's monsoon. I didn't make the trip out, so this is according to St. Bonaventure's website.

The Griffs are home September 27 for a game against Monroe Community College at 3:30.

Griffs Lose More Than A Doubleheader

I just got home from the first day of the Canisius Classic. It was a tough day for Canisius softball.

It was an overcast, humid day at the crowded Pepsi Center in Amherst. Crowded because the facility, which is adjacent to the University at Buffalo, was a favorite parking spot for those attending the Buffalo-Temple football game. I arrived in time for the second game at 11:00 am (9 is too early for me!), and managed to find a parking spot. The Griffs had just completed their first game (a loss to Niagara) when I noticed sophomore first baseman Kerry Ulmer in a sling and looking a bit sad. I asked around for information, and it seems that she has a serious shoulder injury. I will try to find more information.

The Griffs played their second game of the day against St. Bonaventure, and lost 1-0. The girls seemed to be dragging a bit in the sticky weather, but they got 4 innings of good pitching from freshman Caroline Main (Seaside, CA). Caroline was 29-5 at Stevenson High last year, and though she seemed to struggle with her control early on, she settled down and only allowed one run. Mallory Aldred, the senior who last year set an NCAA Division 1 record for saves in a season (15), pitched the final 2 innings, and struck out 4 I believe; she looked very sharp. I would guess she would be more of a starter next spring. Offensively, the Canisius bats were quiet.

Canisius will play Buffalo Sunday morning, followed by the Championship and consolation games of the tourney. If the weather holds out.

Canisius/Nan Harvey Classic

The Canisius/Nan Harvey Classic will be on Saturday, September 13 and Sunday, September 14 at the Pepsi Center in Amherst and will include the entire Big 4 (Canisius, Niagara, St. Bonaventure, and Buffalo). Two games will go on at once with action starting at 9:00 am on Saturday. The Griffs will face Niagara in the opening game and then meet St. Bonaventure at 11:00. Action will continue on Sunday at 9:00 am when the Griffs face Buffalo. The final games will occur on Sunday at 11:00 with a championship game and a consolation match.

Hope it doesn't rain !

Fall Season Opener

Softball returned to Canisius Saturday, September 6 as the Golden Griffins played a team of Canadian "All-Stars" at the Demske Sports Complex. All the stars were playing for Canisius however, and it was so lopsided I don't even remember the final score! I think it was 21-2 or something like that.

It was an overcast, drizzly day in Buffalo, but that didn't prevent super pitcher Juliette Bowers from wearing shades and her intimidating ever present smile ! I don't think she broke much of a sweat though. National record holder (saves) Mallory Aldred also saw some action, but it was really a day for the freshmen to get their feet wet (although the new turf probably kept them dry !).

I'll be posting profiles of the newcomers, but I will say that Lauryn Chris was impressive at second base, and WNY player of the year Katie Lancellotti looks very imposing at the plate.
